REMARKS: The first modern semi-auto handguns appeared near the end of the 19th century. Built at V.C. Schilling, Suhl, for retailer Theodor Bergmann, Gaggenau. Developed in 1894 by firearms engineer Louis Schmeisser, father of designers Hans and Hugo Schmeisser. 10" overall, 4.5" barrel, 1.15 lbs. I bought mine from a guy who bought it from a WWII vet's widow, story goes that he got it from a civilian weapons turn-in in Germany. Marked: PATENT BREVETE SUHL - "Gaggenau Bergmann logo" - "double crown over U" (examined Germany) - (assembly numbers) 2 - 4 - 6 - 11.

REMARKS: Eugene Stoner inspired 1956 design. High quality civilian AR-15 clone that was budget priced, built in Windham, Maine. Interchangeable upper 16 inch M4 & 20 inch heavy barrel. Extremely accurate to 500 yards, no shooting bounce with the full sized buttstock, fancy optical scopes aren't needed. My generation might be the last to legally own these incorrectly labeled assault weapons in California, thereby lessening our unorganized militia potential.

REMARKS: Chicago Fire Arms owner Peter Finnegan contracted Ames Sword Company to build 12,800 palm pistols at their factory in Massachusetts. Supposedly built so that he could sell them as souvenirs at the 1893 World's Fair in Illinois, production numbers were apparently missed and it resulted in litigation. Finnegan bought the palm pistol patents from Minneapolis Arms in 1892, who in turn bought the rights from Frenchman Jaques Turbiaux, who invented it in 1882. Ordered for Mexican War troopers who volunteered alongside Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Walker, former Texas Ranger; 1,000 (plus 200 civilian) original revolvers were issued to five regimental cavalry units before being supplemented by Colt's 1848 Dragoons. 9" barrel, 4.58lbs. China-owned Norinco produced modern copies. This one was first purchased by former LAPD Chief James Davis for his lady friend, he gave it to her during WWII because she worked alone running an all night diner in Los Angeles, I bought it from her estate. Drillings are a double shotgun for distant birds or nearby large mammals with a rifled single shot cartridge rifle placed underneath and between the two shotgun barrels for longer distance shots on larger animals. Adjustable triggers, flip up iron sight, 26 inch barrels, claw scope mount. Marked: NITRO-P (pre-1912) - (pound sterling) L - "Byzantine birds" - "crown over U" (Germany) - "crown over S" (smoothbore shotgun) - "crown over W" (choked shotgun) - "crown over G" (rifled barrel rifle).

Basic concept from 1936, the design is credited to FN Herstal team leader Dieudonne Saive, better known for the FAL which was already being developed as the first FN-49 were being built. Mine went to the Argentine Navy, was then rebuilt for the military from 7.65 Argentine to 7.62 NATO. Fabreek nass-ee-en-al. Small scratch on stock: PUA 38. REMARKS: American front line workhorse during WWII, post-WWI design by John Garand. Assembled from Danish parts at CAI (Century International Arms) on a steel receiver contracted from Ruger's Pine Tree Investment castings. 1954 Beretta made Denmark issue 24" barrel. GM50 "crown over FKF over 1955" bayonet. Famous for eating thumbs, does hurt. Moderate bounce on target reacquire, perfect military peep sights. Safe and cheap throw together that's very accurate and reliable. Garand surname is pronounced like gairend, original French slur sounds like guron, universally called M1 ga-rand.

REMARKS: Gaston Glock came from Deutsch-Wagram outside Vienna, the 1980 design isn't totally original as H&K had made "plastic" frames for years, but he found a way to make them cheap. Later went to (tax haven) Luxembourg where a business partner tried to have him killed, seems an unarmed Gaston took the would-be assassins down bare fisted. This model was introduced in 1990. Trigger pull finishes cocking a partially precocked striker. 4.49" barrel, 1.70lbs. Marked: Glock - 22 - AUSTRIA - 40 SW - MADE IN AUSTRIA - US. Pat. 4,534,889 4,825,744 4,893,546 - "polygon" (polygon rifling). Import mark: GLOCK. INC., SMYRNA GA. #2: First introduced in 1988, the Generation 3 came about in 1998, becoming one of the most widespread handguns.

REMARKS: Claimed to be the fastest quick-draw pistol. The P7 has a full size 4.13 inch polygon rifled barrel on a compact frame, 2.26lbs loaded, light recoil, extremely accurate, extremely reliable. Butt magazine release. Squeeze safety cocks the firing pin making a single action pistol act more like a safe double action. Heckler & Koch (pronounced heckler & coke) was founded in 1949 by former Mauser employees. Put together from loosely based American squeeze cocking and Swiss/German Volkssturmgewehr gas retarding concepts in 1976 by an HK engineering team led by Helmut Weldle. Production started in 1979 for the West German government to replace police pistols, along with simultaneous civilian sales and exports. Greece made their own licensed PSP. Fired December 4, 1983 by Herrmann. Marked: HECKLER & KOCH GMBH OBERNDORF/N MADE IN GERMANY - 9mmx19 - ID (date) - "antler" (Ulm) - "eagle N" (nitro) - (left grip) HK P7. REMARKS: Iver Johnson immigrated to the USA from Norway in 1863, worked as a gunsmith, then cofounded Johnson, Bye & Co. in Worcester. Johnson bought out Martin Bye and moved the company to Fitchburg in 1891, died in 1895. The factory built millions of firearms into the 1970s. Leon Czolgosz shot President McKinley with a revolver similar to this one (that one has a 3" barrel and exposed hammer), he could've gotten the idea from Gaetano Bresci, who bought one then returned to Italy where he used it to kill a European king. Senator Kennedy was shot with a Model 55. Original 2" barrel, pretty accurate, concealed hammer, safety trigger. Built 1897-1908 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Marked: T. JUNE 16, 96 AUG. 25, 96. PT 16 04 PATS PENDING.

REMARKS: Jesus says, "he that hath no sword let him sell his garment and buy one." Ultra cheap pocket gun. Built by Calwestco in Irvine, California. My first handgun was only $50 new! Has been many places and fired many thousands of rounds. It's important to use longer cased hyper velocity ammunition like CCI Stinger for accuracy and reliable feeding/ejection, generally true for all pocket sized twenty-two semi-autos.

REMARKS: Invented by Jose Lopez Arnaiz, the lever on the slide allows one hand chambering of a round. Arnaiz bought already made Spanish Sharp pistols that were licensed to gunmaker Hijos de Calixto Arrizabalaga, then installed his lever and resold them to civilians, maybe a military contract or two. 4.25" tip-up barrel on this model, 2.01 lbs. Marked: "crown over x in shield" (Eibar) - PISTOLA "JO.LO.AR" EIBAR (ESPANA) ANO 1924 PATENTES Nos 68027 Y 70235 - "crown over P" (pistol) - (internal) 1926 - "JO.LO.AR"-F. 8286 - P.V. REMARKS: Pistols with a moving trigger guard that can chamber a round with one hand, first ones labeled Theodor Bergmann. Basic Browning style, they use Witold Chylewski's lever concept: Chylewski-SIG. 6-round (Model 2A) and two hand (minus the A) models were produced concurrently. 2.125" barrels, 15oz, pretty accurate to 15 yards. Someone scratched "VERGO" & "MAY 1960" on the inside side of the grips on 31119. Marked: (inside) H - (frame & slide) "circle K" - AKT.-GES.LIGNOSE.BERLIN. ABTEILUNG SUHL-CAL.6,35-D.R.P. - "crown over N" (nitro).

Three more one-hand pistols:

Norinco Model 77B, the large frame (9-round) 9x19mm seems based on the European pockets but is a much different design. The Chinese PLA issued a 7.65mm Type 77 during the 1980s. Zbrojovka Praga (Czech) made a one handed 25acp during the 1920s that had a folding trigger.

REMARKS: Designed by German-born Ferdinand Mannlicher (pronounced manlicker with the English alphabet) in the 1880s while living in Austria, variations became the Austrian front line rifle until WWII, several million were built for their military. After WWI many were rebuilt into this 19.65 inch short barrel Stutzen design as a cheap way to modernize. Relegated to rear line or police roles during WWII as Austria and Hungary's front line weapons gradually became German style. Rebuilding done 1930-1938 at Steyr (stire like tire) in Austria and FEG in Hungary. #1 started out as an Austrian M90 Carbine in 1891, rebuilt/rebarreled in 1931 by Hungary as an M95 with stacking hook, then issued to the Hungarian Gendarmerie. Marked: CS.1964 (CSENDOR) - K.A.B. - OEWG. #2 built during WWI, carbine sights. #3 has rifle sights. Import barrel mark (2nd & 3rd): CAI ST ALB VT.

REMARKS: Oviedo made M93 Mauser (like Chairman Mao-zer), same type used during the Spanish War. Returned during or after the Spanish Civil War and cut into a Model 1916 (gas escape & thumb space for clips). Rebuilt around 1965 from 7mm Mauser to 7.62x51mm. Not sure why the Spanish would build an FR7 and then just remake a Model 1916 alongside it. Maybe the two models differentiated civilian police and paramilitary police forces? Unmarked except inspector Maltese cross stamps on parts, remnants of "Fabrica de Armas Oviedo" crest, and new "OT" serial number was put on most parts. Marked inside: "flaming bomb" - "R" - "AA circle" (inspection). Import barrel mark (hidden under stock): OVIEDO SPAIN M1916 SAMCO MIA FL 308W.

Mine came with a brass catch & sleeves, 1914 arsenal bayonet lug update, original M94 sight, Pramm clamp-on diopters & hoods, Soderin diopter, early M96 leaf, later "T" M38 (all for different ammo), SM sikte F ram (M55), and M58 sight for use with sniper ammo. REMARKS: Made in Belgium, UK, and USA from 1878 to 1914, pocket version of the 1867 full size Royal Irish Constabulary. Model used by Charles Guiteau to assassinate President Garfield in 1881. Guiteau wanted ivory grips so it would look good in a museum, kept at the Smithsonian until it was stolen. #1: African ivory, hammer pre-halfcocked lock. Marked: BRITISH BULL-DOG - "BPC swords" (Birmingham) - "V swords" (inspection) - 444. Moderate recoil, accurate enough to hit at a few yards. #2: Fluted cylinder reduced carry weight. Marked: BRITISH BULLDOG - "ELG" - "star over S" - 99. #3: Another Webley clone built by the Belgian firms. Marked: BRITISH BULLDOG - "ELG" - "star over S" - (frame, cyl, barrel) 16. #4: Batch refurbished Bulldog built at Johnson, Bye & Co. in Worcester for St. Louis distributor E.C. Meacham. 2.75" barrel in the same space as a 2.5" barrel, (forward click) hammer lock, fluted cylinder. Marked: BRITISH BULLDOG - 5.
